Competency Assessment Definition

Competency assessment is the process of collecting and evaluating evidence to determine whether a person is competent against assessment standards. A competency assessment must always be conducted by a certified Competence Assessor to ensure it is Valid, Authentic, Reliable, Current, and Sufficient and compliance with organisational requirements. In a competency assessment, everyone performing the same job is measured using the same assessment criteria and methodology, ensuring consistency, transparency, fairness and objective evaluation across the organisation.

Competency Assessment Process Overview

Competency is the state of possessing the required knowledge, kills, and behaviours necessary to perform a task successfully and consistently, in accordance with defined assessment standards and the organisation’s values, policies, and procedures.

Competencies are task- or activity-based. For each task, the required knowledge, skills, and behaviours are assessed against defined assessment standards. A candidate is deemed competent for a job role only after successfully demonstrating competence in all tasks that comprise the role.

Competency is not merely about completing a task successfully; it is also about executing the task in full alignment with the organisation’s standards, values, policies, and procedures.
